Horse Rug Cleaning

Cleaning your horse rug at home can be tedious at the best of times, but did you know that most laundry detergents break down the waterproofing membrane of your rug?

Using a standard washing machine is ineffective and can cause considerable damage to your machine. It takes quite a bit of effort to remove all the hair, sweat and faeces- and even then, you may not be able to see what is left behind in your machine. The use of a pressure hose on your horse rugs is very damaging, as it simply pushes all the dirt and muck further into the materials and destroys the waterproofing membrane.

In order to keep your horse rugs in good working order and extend their life, washing & repairing is a necessity. We highly recommend that you clean your rugs and saddle pads on a regular basis to reduce the risk of bacterial growth and fungal skin conditions. Physical exertion leaves horses sweaty. Perspiration mixes with dust and grime, resulting in encrustations on textiles which clog pores and impairs breathability of the rug.

In addition to providing hygiene protection, nice smelling rugs and excellent visual appearance, cleaning before storing your rug will also avoid permanent stains and the possibility of nesting creatures such as mice!

Major manufacturers of horse rugs also recommend cleaning on a regular basis to extend the life of the rug. We strictly follow manufacturer’s instructions to ensure waterproof membranes are protected. The Pet Laundry uses a large industrial washing machine designed to ensure the highest quality with the utmost care for the materials. The machine is an extractor washer which helps to reduce the wear and tear on your rugs while being cleaned with multiple wash and rinse cycles to aid in deep cleaning. Once we have washed and inspected your rugs, they are returned to you beautifully clean and folded, in clear polythene bags; perfect to put into storage or ready to get straight back into active use.

Re-proofing for rugs and blankets is available. All items for re-proofing must be laundered by us to ensure the rugs are clean therefore absorbing the waterproofing effectively.

Repairs

We specialise in repairing all types of synthetic, canvas and cotton horse rugs and blankets, small or large rips and tears. All repairs will be quoted for your approval before repairs take place.

Waterproofing

It is recommended that rugs are to be reproofed every year. As the rugs get older, the nature of the fabric changes; extreme weather conditions, UV rays from the sun, barbwire fencing or when your horse rubs up against a tree can all add up to damaging the fabric of your rug. The fibres in the material weaken and become brittle and start to break down leaving rugs porous and unable to keep the rain out. 

We use specially formulated detergents and water proofing agents such as Nikwax Rug Proof, as it is created specifically to prolong the life and durability of your horse's rug. Reproofing of Synthetic rugs is performed in our Industrial washing machine, to ensure that the whole rug is treated to the highest standard. Not only will your horse remain dry and protected against the weather, it will also revive breathability of the rug which helps maintain insulation, keeping your horse warm. All rugs must be laundered by us to ensure the rug is clean prior to applying waterproofing. 

We also reproof Canvas rugs using Nikwax's quality proofing agent. 

A good sign that your rugs need reproofing is when water droplets no longer bead on your rug during heavy rain.
